When an appliance, furnace, or air conditioner reaches the end of its life, the models that carry the federal ENERGY STAR label have been independently verified to use less energy than standard models. Replacing a failing appliance with an efficient one is an easy decision; replacing a working one purely to save energy rarely pays back, so let the timing follow the equipment.
Where the money actually goes
It helps to know where a typical home's energy money goes, because it tells you where the effort is worth spending. In most homes, heating and cooling is by far the largest slice of the bill — often close to half — which is why sealing leaks and managing the thermostat matter more than any other single thing. Heating water is usually the next biggest piece, which is why the water-heater settings are worth attention. Everything else — lighting, appliances, electronics — is real but smaller, which means it is the place for steady habits rather than the place to start.
This ordering matters because energy advice is full of small tips that feel virtuous but barely move the bill, while the changes that actually matter get skipped because they sound like more work. Unplugging a phone charger saves a trickle; sealing the drafts around a drafty door and not heating an empty house at night save real money. If you only do a few things, do the big ones first: seal the leaks, set the thermostat to follow your actual schedule, and turn the water heater down to a sensible temperature. The small habits are worth keeping, but they are the finishing touches, not the foundation.
A word of caution about products sold as miracle energy-savers: be skeptical of any gadget advertised to slash your bill by plugging into an outlet, or any unsolicited caller offering a too-good energy "program."
